Bible Study - LUKE: The Game Plan
1. What is something you are thankful for or are celebrating?
2. Where are you experiencing stress or anxiety? Where would like to see God move in your life or in the life of someone close to you? Ask your group to be praying with you about that.
3. What did you hear in this week’s sermon that was new or particularly interesting? Did anything stand out to you as puzzling or troubling?
4. Read Luke 6:17-45. Look at the notes in your Luke Journal related to this passage (pages 46-51). What stood out to you the most from these readings? What questions did you make note of that were raised for you by these readings? Did anything in these readings prompt you to do anything? To change anything? To believe something new?
5. In this passage Jesus pronounces blessings on some people and woes on others. Which group do you see yourself in? Why? In chapters 4, 5 & 6 of Luke, Jesus’s life is threatened. What was Jesus teaching that provoked such a strong reaction? Which of the things Jesus instructs us to do in this passage threaten your prosperity, safety or happiness? Why?
6. Make a list of all the things in this passage that Jesus instructs us to do, or to avoid doing. Why do we need to be careful to avoid seeing this as some kind of checklist of things you do, don’t do, and keep up with?
7. This passage ends with Jesus talking about the importance of what’s in our hearts. What is the connection between our hearts, and saying and doing the things Jesus calls us to? Chris said that ultimately being able to live, act and talk like Jesus did, arises out of a heart that’s merciful. How has God been merciful to you?
What can you do to cultivate a heart of mercy?
8. Following Jesus means learning to see God the way Jesus sees Him and living accordingly. What does Jesus say or infer in this week’s reading about how Jesus sees who God is and what He’s like? Does Jesus description of who God is and what He is like differ from your understanding of God? How? Can you imagine if you lived in a society where everyone believed in God the way Jesus is speaking of Him and then lived in light of it? What would that society be like?
9. How did Jesus’s life demonstrate that he believed God was absurdly generous? Do you believe God is absurdly generous? Why? If someone were to closely observe your life, what do you think they would say your life demonstrates that you believe about God?
10. In the next 24-48 hours, what simple next step could you take in obedience to what you’ve learned from your time in God’s Word? Who would benefit from hearing what you’ve learned this week? Will you share it with them?
